No Compromise on the Campaign Trail

George knew running for Governor would be challenging to His Christian witness, but he never knew it could cost him the election. George found himself in an uncomfortable issue of conscience. Will he serve the Lord in integrity or compromise so he can win the election? Read George’s story here:

The Lord had called George to run for, Governor of Iowa, but George knew that he was supposed to run a campaign of integrity not compromising any of his biblical principles on any issue.  Now, he was in a situation that either he had to compromise his conservative stand against abortion or lose the backing of the state’s most powerful Senator. Senator Nelson’s backing of any candidate meant that candidate would win the election as the next Governor of Iowa. George was the leading contender in all the polls up to this point. Senator Nelson had asked for a meeting with George.

Senator Wilson began, “George I want to give you my full backing in this upcoming election. There is one thorn in my side stopping me from giving that nod to you.” “Senator what is the obstacle?” “You have actively campaigned against abortion in any form since you announced you were running for Governor.” “Yes I have Senator because being a Christian I believe in the sanctity of life; every baby not born (no matter what stage of development) is a living, breathing person who has the right to live.” “Well, George I think as long as the fetus is still in the womb, it’s not defined as a life. Furthermore the mother has the right to determine if the baby should live or not.” George’s very handsome features turned beat red as he attempted to check his anger.

“George if you want my support for your campaign change your position on abortion from pro-life to pro-abortion!” George could not believe he was hearing this. His bushy eyebrows furrowed as his icy, blue eyes stared at the Senator in utter indignation. “Are you going to let this issue of conscience cost you being elected Governor?”

“I will do everything in my power to get you elected if you honor my wishes and change your stance on this sensitive issue of abortion.” Senator do you know what you are asking me to do?” “Yes, just acknowledge that you were wrong about being against abortion and say you are in favor of it after all.”  No, Senator it goes much deeper than that. You are asking me to violate one of my core beliefs that abortion is wrong. You are telling me to compromise my witness before the Lord.”  “Well I would not go that far George.” Senator this is how I read your proposal: Either I agree with your thinking on abortion or you will not give me your endorsement. If I do not get your support, I will lose the election.” ” You hit the nail on the head George.”  “You know Senator; I will not compromise my belief on abortion being evil and wrong. So you can forget giving your support to my campaign. I will lose the race for Governor before I will change my position on abortion being right. I will never agree that abortion is right. God and only God, the Giver of Life, decides who lives or dies.”” Senator our meeting is over.” “It sure is George!” “You would have made such a fine Governor to.”

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:23-24
