 The Stubborn Soul

Dave was sitting in the service not by choice; his Christian girlfriend forced him to come. She said if you want to date me then you need to attend church with me or we are done. So Dave went along grudgingly with no intent of getting born again or letting the Holy Spirit touch him in anyway. The sermon on this particular Sunday night was about not hardening your heart when you hear God speaking to you. Dave resisted the Spirit of God violently for months. Every time he heard the Lord whisper to him about repenting of his sins; Dave would do something desperate drowning out the Lord’s voice in his heart.

Dave continued to go to extremes to avoid the Lord’s call for the salvation of his soul; like the Saturday night before this Sunday service. He was at a local bar with some of his drinking buddies, when the Lord began to whisper to Dave about getting born again and walk in God’s kingdom instead of Satan’s. There was a woman sitting next to him; she was very attractive and she was making eyes at Dave. (So he thought) “Hi how about having a drink with me?” “I wouldn’t drink with you if you were the last man on the planet; I was looking for my husband to come and join me.” “Yeah I can see why he’s staying away; you   have as much personality as a sandbag.” She promptly threw her drink in Dave’s face. Dave lifted his arm to whack her across the face, when her husband showed up, a lumbering body builder, he grabbed Dave’s arm, whirls him around and punches him in the face. Next he picked Dave up like he was a piece of noodle, and threw him against the adjacent wall.

Dave woke up in the emergency room not knowing how he got there. He had a black eye swollen two times bigger than normal and three very cracked ribs. His Christian girlfriend picked up Dave at the emergency room and gingerly walked him to her car. Dave smelled like a winery from drowning himself in drinks the previous night. “You better stop this incessant drinking and show your sorry self at church tonight or we are through!”  Dave rolled his eyes from north to south and reluctantly agreed to attend that Sunday night service. He was really in no shape to drive so she had to pick him and drive him to the service.

The pastor delivered a sermon that he particularly wrote for Dave (so it seemed like) but Dave was nowhere in the service. He was thinking about how there was no way in this universe or the next, that he was going to give his life to the Jewish carpenter who died for him so long ago. Jesus appeared -soundly interrupting Dave’s distant thoughts. “Dave you have been avoiding my Spirit for months; actually years and now is the time to choose life or death. Please choose life for tonight will be your last chance to choose.” Dave’s mouth dropped, he rubbed his eyes and shook his head. This has got to be a dream he muttered to himself. “Dave I am the Lord Jesus Christ and I have been talking to you about your soul for a very long time. This is no dream!” Jesus touched Dave and healed him instantly of all his injuries and pain. Dave fell to his knees before Jesus and surrendered his heart right there. Dave could no longer be called “The stubborn soul.”

As has just been said: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion." Hebrews 3:15
