Why Should I Pay Taxes

Louise was a dedicated Christian woman. She had a strong biblical foundation and she knew Jesus since early childhood. She grew up in a warm, loving Christian environment. Her parents loved God with all their hearts and were very involved in their local church. They faithfully attended every service and bible study the church sponsored. They taught Sunday school and had a vast understanding of the bible. There was one major flaw in their belief system they did not pay income taxes. They thought it was robbing God of money He should get. Louise, in her adult life, carried on the same practice until the IRS caught up to her practices and levied a heavy penalty against her for all those years of not paying taxes.

“Oh this is just great! Why should I pay taxes? This income belongs to God not the IRS.” She was dumfounded by the IRS notice she clenched tightly in her fist. Anger flustered her beautiful face and her green eyes flamed with fury as she wrinkled her beautiful olive complexion into a distorted dried looking prune. How in the world was she going to come up with $40,000 dollars within 6 months?  She vowed she would not pay the back income taxes anyway. She was not about to pay taxes which she thought were wrong to pay in the first place.

She consulted her parents (Who counseled her to not pay the taxes because it was God’s money.) She talked to her financial advisors, her closet friends and her fiancée. She spoke to members in her choir and her bible study companions. They all accept, her parents, strongly advised her to pay her taxes and figure out a way to pay back the $40,000 she owed the government. By now she was extremely upset, confused and she did not know where to turn for help. She decided to talk with her pastor about this looming financial crisis. Surely, being a man of God he could give her some solid counsel. She went to  visit him at the church.

She sat in Pastor Wilson’s office fidgeting with her purse as she looked nervously around the office. Just then Pastor Wilson came in and warmly greeted Louise. “What can I do for you?” “Pastor I am in deep financial trouble and I need to hear from God on my circumstance.” She explained all that was transpiring in her life at the moment…  Pastor Wilson listened compassionately for 35 minutes as Louise told him a history of her financial woes with the IRS. She told him how she was taught by her parents to not pay taxes because that money belonged to God. Pastor Wilson sat quietly for several minutes thinking about what to say.

Louise let’s pray and ask the Lord to come into this circumstance and give you wisdom on the right course of action to take in this crisis. (Pastor Wilson knew she should pay her taxes because it is taught in the bible they that she is supposed to pay her taxes. But he felt she would not listen to his counsel because she was so against the idea of paying taxes.) So they prayed the Lord would give her wisdom about what do and that He would give her peace.

That night Louise came across Romans 13:6 “This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing.” The Lord opened her mind and revealed to her that her beliefs she held from childhood were wrong. He wanted to her to pay her taxes every year and pay off her $40,000 tax penalty. Now Louise knew “Why should I pay taxes!” This Christian woman had reached another maturity level in Christ.

This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. Romans  13:6
